Dogs can be great travel companions, as long as you think ahead about their travel needs. Check out this travel checklist to help your dog stay happy for the long haul.

Get your dog used to the car

Practice by letting your dog sit in it with you without leaving the driveway, and then going for short rides.

DOG TRAVEL TIPS

Use a carrier or harness while driving. No matter how well-trained your dog is, many professionals recommend keeping your dog in the crate during travel.

Stop frequently for potty breaks (about every 2-4 hours)

Take your dog out at rest stops without a leash. Be sure to clean up after your dog.

Bring your dog’s favorite food, toys, blankets and collapsible travel bows

Moist Towelettes are essential when traveling with your dog. Having a few towels on hand will be useful.

Other Preparations

In addition to packing everything your puppy or dog needs, there are a few other preparations you need to make. First, check with your vet to make sure that your dog is healthy enough for travel and that he is up to date on all of his vaccinations. If you end up having to board your dog unexpectedly, most kennels will not accept dogs that have not had their bordatella vaccine and they might need a health certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian.

Do not let your dog ride with his head sticking out of an open window. This can lead to eye injuries.

Never, ever leave your dog unattended

Never leave your furry friend unattended in a parked car for any period amount of time.
